A Day by the Water

A Day by the Water

A Day by the Water

There are certain days that seem to know exactly what they are doing.

You wake up without setting an alarm. The morning is warm, but not too warm. The windows are open. Somewhere outside, you can hear birds, a car passing, the faint sound of someone beginning their day. You pull on something comfortable—maybe something lavender, maybe something blue—and you don’t really think about it. You just know it feels right.

And then you go to the beach. Not because you have planned an elaborate day. Not because you have somewhere important to be. Just because the water is there, and your body knows it needs to move.

The light beside the ocean

The first thing you notice is the light. Everything looks a little different beside the ocean. The colors become softer. The sky seems enormous. Even ordinary things—a lifeguard stand, a bicycle, someone’s beach towel—seem to belong to a particular little world. You walk toward the water. Your shoes come off somewhere along the way. The sand is warm. The ocean is cold enough to make you laugh when you first step in, and you stay anyway.

Later, you wander back toward the boardwalk. Maybe you stop for something cold to drink. Maybe you find a little shop selling things you don’t need—a shell, a postcard, a strange piece of jewelry. You pick it up, turn it over, and wonder who made it. You don’t buy it. Or maybe you do. That is the kind of decision that belongs to a beach day.

The boardwalk and its little magic

The boardwalk has its own kind of magic. There is something wonderful about places that are slightly removed from ordinary life. The lights. The music. The smell of food. The sounds of people laughing somewhere nearby. The ocean continuing beside everything, completely indifferent to all of it. You walk without much of a destination, and this is where the little things begin to matter. The color of someone’s umbrella. A horse printed on the shirt of someone walking past. A purple flower growing through a crack. The reflection of the sun on a window. A tiny shell caught in the edge of your sandal. A song coming from an arcade that you haven’t heard in years. None of these things were planned. That is why you remember them.

When doing nothing feels like everything

Maybe you sit somewhere and watch the afternoon turn toward evening. The beach begins to empty. The sunlight changes. The blue of the water becomes deeper. Then violet. Then something almost impossible to name. You realize you have been sitting there for twenty minutes doing absolutely nothing, and somehow, it feels like the most productive part of your day.

There is a little mystery in moments like this. Not the dramatic kind. Nothing needs to happen. It is simply the feeling that the world is slightly more interesting than you remembered. That there are still beautiful things you haven’t noticed. That somewhere between the sea and the sky, ordinary life has left a little room for surprise.

The colors the sky saves for evening

By evening, you find yourself back on the boardwalk. The lights have come on. You are tired in the best possible way. Your hair smells like salt. There is sand everywhere. You have probably eaten something you wouldn’t normally eat. You have a little souvenir in your pocket. And the sky is putting on its final show. Pink. Lavender. Deep blue. The colors we always seem to come back to.

You look at the ocean one more time before heading home. Nothing extraordinary happened today. And that is exactly what made it extraordinary. You went to the beach. You walked. You laughed. You noticed things. You let the day unfold. And somewhere along the way, a few little pieces of beauty found you.

Maybe that is enough. Maybe a good life is partly about learning to recognize those moments when they arrive. A beautiful color. A mysterious little object. A warm evening. A song from somewhere down the boardwalk. The person you love walking beside you. The ocean at dusk. The feeling that, for one day at least, you didn’t need anything more.

Just a little sun. A little sea. A little mystery. And a few beautiful things to remember.
