Land, Sea & Sky
The visual language of Cheval Lavande.
Cheval Lavande began with a feeling, a vision of horses galloping through lavender.
Sunset melting behind, creating glimmers from their gallops.
Somewhere between land and water, sky all above.
Between dusk and morning.
Between something old and something just beginning.
The name itself carries a landscape.
Cheval — the horse, moving through a field, carrying history, freedom, elegance. Action.
Lavande — lavender, growing low to the earth, fragrant and soft, connected to season and place. Rest.
We think often about three places: land, sea and sky.
Where else could we be?
Land is grounding.
It is grass beneath the feet, wildflowers growing where they please, horses moving through open space, old wood, stone, soil and things made by hand.
Sea is movement.
Water, shells, reflections, glass, salt, blue skies and golden rays, objects washed ashore. It has a certain looseness to it — beautiful things becoming softened by time. Drift wood, soft and almost indestructible.
Sky is possibility.
Clouds. Moonlight. Twilight. Stars. Melting sunsets. The enormous blue space above us that makes everything more magical.
Cheval Lavande lives somewhere in the meeting point of all three.
This is why our imagery does not always look polished in the traditional sense.
We like a little blur.
We like air bubbles.
We like flowers photographed at night.
We like the strange blue cast of a photograph taken after sunset.
We enjoy our creations arranged on rocks, branches, resting in grass. Swimming!
We like objects that look as though they have wandered into the picture rather than been placed there perfectly.
There is something about nature that resists perfection. Harmony.
A flower bends.
A wave tides.
A horse can fly.
The sky refuses to hold the same color for very long. Each moment a new gift.
We want some of that impermanence in the world of Cheval Lavande.
Our colors often move between deeper violet and pale lavender, blue, midnight, soft green and the occasional unexpected flash of pink or silver. They are colors that feel found rather than selected from a chart.
It is a world where a shell can sit beside a ballet shoe. Where lavender can appear next to a horse. Where a piece of clothing can be photographed in a field instead of against a white wall. A dream in real life.
The point is not to create a perfect picture.
The point is to create a feeling that makes you want to stay in the picture.
Cheval Lavande is interested in that moment.
The moment when an ordinary object becomes beautiful because of its surroundings.
The moment when the light changes.
The moment when the natural world seems to quietly arrange itself.
Land.
Sea.
Sky.
